Family Sues Inglewood Unified School District Over Viral Bathroom Bullying Attack

Case Overview

Mendez & Sanchez APC has filed a lawsuit against Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) on behalf of a 10-year-old girl who was violently attacked in a restroom at Woodworth-Monroe TK–8 Academy. The assault was captured on a cell phone, shared widely on social media, and has sparked outrage over how the school and district handle bullying. The complaint alleges that IUSD failed to protect a vulnerable student despite repeated warnings from her family.

What Happened in the Restroom

On April 30, 2025, just after dismissal, the child entered a girls’ restroom while her siblings and grandmother waited outside. Inside, a group of girls confronted her. In the now-viral video, the victim appears cornered, crying, and begging them to stop before one girl grabs her by the hair, throws her to the floor, and repeatedly hits her while others watch, laugh, and record. No staff member is seen intervening, and the lawsuit alleges there was no meaningful adult supervision in or near the restroom at the time.

Pattern of Bullying and Prior Warnings

According to the family, this was the culmination of months of bullying involving the same group of students. The child and her siblings were allegedly mocked, harassed, and taunted, including cruel comments about their father’s death. Their mother states she made multiple reports to school staff and the district, asking for help and protection. The lawsuit claims those reports were minimized or ignored, allowing the bullying to escalate until it turned into a violent, filmed attack.

District Response vs. Reality on Campus

After the video went public, Inglewood Unified issued a statement saying that student safety is its “highest priority” and that the incident was under investigation. The school’s principal also notified parents and acknowledged that multiple students were present in the restroom and encouraging the fight. The lawsuit, however, alleges a sharp disconnect between those public assurances and what actually happened: repeated complaints allegedly went unresolved, high-risk areas were left unsupervised, and the 10-year-old victim was even treated as if she had been in a mutual “fight” rather than recognized as a child who was ambushed and assaulted.

Legal Action and What the Family Seeks

The lawsuit brings claims including negligence, negligent supervision, and failure to protect a student from known bullying and foreseeable harm. The family is seeking compensation for the child’s physical injuries, emotional trauma, and disruption to her education, as well as damages for the family’s own distress. Just as importantly, the suit asks for policy and training changes within IUSD: better supervision in restrooms and dismissal areas, stronger responses to bullying reports, and clear protections so victims are not punished for coming forward.
